The ambitious project of Guru Nanak Dev University to have a solar energy plant on its campus is nearing completion.

The university has installed solar panels atop 12 roofs. These panels will be installed on top of more six buildings in a month.

The university authorities had approached the Solar Energy Corporation of India for the installation of solar panels.

The university was allocated a rooftop solar energy plant of 3 Mega Watt under the Union Government’s Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM).

The project was given to M/s Azur Power Rooftop One Pvt Limited, Delhi. The firm will look after the project for 25 years free of cost. In return, the university is targeting to get solar electricity at a subsidised rate of Rs 3.32 per unit.

Vice-Chancellor Prof Jaspal Singh Sandhu, said, “At present, only six buildings are left to be covered under the project and it will take a month. The project will help the institute save energy and power.” The solar plant will provide continuous power supply to the campus.
