Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) has released a song that has been adopted as its official anthem. The song has been written by Padma Shree Surjit Patar and was released during recent celebrations of the 550th Guru Nanak Dev’s birth anniversary celebrations.

The song has been composed by the music department of the university. “We have been working on conceptualising and composing the song for the past one year. The idea was conceived taking a cue from most educational premier institutions across the country, including Benaras Hindu University and Kolkata University, who have their own anthems. Even universities across the globe too adopt their specific anthems as a mark of respect and inculcating a sense of identity to their institution,” said GNDU Vice Chancellor Jaspal Sandhu.

The song, he says, has been adopted after generating a consensus among staff and officials of the university. “We had asked anyone, who had objections over the song to come forward and share it with us. Since we got favorable response from everyone, it has been adopted officially.” The song will be played at every official event and function of the university as per the orders of the registrar.

With this, the GNDU also becomes the first government-run educational institution in Punjab to have its own official anthem. “I consider it as a matter of pride,” the VC added.
