GNDU leads green initiatives with cycling campaign

Maintaining its status as the ‘green campus’ and aligning with the Fit India Movement, Guru Nanak Dev University has launched ‘Sundays on Cycle’ initiative, aimed at promoting the use of bicycles as a mode of transport within the campus. Since 2017, the university has installed e-bike and regular bicycle stations across the campus to encourage a healthier and more sustainable mode of conveyance.

This initiative was undertaken in accordance with the directions of the Association of Indian Universities, aiming to promote fitness, environmental awareness and a vibrant campus community life among students, faculty and staff.

Under the leadership of Prof (Dr) Karamjeet Singh, Vice-Chancellor of the university, a cycle rally was organised recently by Prof (Dr) Harvinder Singh Saini, Dean, Students’ Welfare, along with his team.

The Vice-Chancellor also emphasised the importance of raising awareness about plastic waste management.

As part of a pre-campaign led by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change under the World Environment Day theme, “Ending Plastic Pollution Globally”, the university hosted the event and workshop to highlight the urgency of collective action against plastic waste.

Prof (Dr) Adarsh Pal Vig, former Chairman of the Punjab Pollution Control Board, shared real-world insights into plastic waste management and encouraged students to adopt environmentally responsible habits on an individual level.

Prof Sandeep Sharma, Head of the Department of Computer Engineering, underscored the need for collaborative efforts to manage e-waste effectively.

Prof Palwinder Singh, Dean, Academic Affairs, and Prof KS Chahal, Registrar of the university, also urged students to reduce plastic use and adopt sustainable alternatives such as cloth bags.
