Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria on Friday called upon institutions of higher education to adapt to rapid global transformations driven by technological advancements, shifting economic patterns and emerging societal challenges. He said that while embracing change, institutions must remain anchored to their inherent value systems.
Kataria was addressing a national conference on ‘Higher Education Policy: Navigating Global Challenges and National Priorities’ at Khalsa University Amritsar (KUA). He emphasised the importance of aligning global developments with national priorities and underlined that higher education must play a pivotal role in fostering inclusive growth, social equity and employment generation.
Eminent scholars, academicians, policymakers and thought leaders gathered at the university to deliberate on the evolving landscape of higher education in India and across the globe. The Governor also toured the heritage buildings of the historic Khalsa College and the university campus, and spent time at the Sikh History Research Centre.
In his address, Kataria laid stress on technology-driven education and skill development. “The growing role of digital technologies, artificial intelligence, and online learning platforms in expanding access to education must be acknowledged. At the same time, concerns regarding equity and the digital divide, particularly in rural areas, must also be addressed,” he said.
Highlighting the importance of research and innovation, the Governor called for greater focus on areas relevant to Punjab, such as sustainable agriculture, water management, rural development and skill-oriented industries.
KUA Pro-Chancellor Rajinder Mohan Singh Chhina said academic initiatives were being undertaken to encourage dialogue among stakeholders in higher education on emerging challenges. He added that the conference aimed to provide a platform for sharing insights, strengthening collaborations and formulating strategies to improve the quality of education while ensuring accessibility and inclusivity for all sections of society.
UGC Joint Secretary Dr Amol M Andhare said, “We must nurture institutions that respond proactively to the changing needs of society and the nation.” He emphasised that the conference reflects Khalsa University’s vision to create a progressive academic environment that blends tradition with modernity and prepares students to face global challenges with confidence, competence and ethical grounding.
