Residents of Gurdaspur were ecstatic after Prime Minister Narendra Modi name-checked local cricketer Dilpreet Singh Bajwa, born in the district, during his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ radio address today.
Discussing the ongoing T20 Cricket World Cup, the PM praised Indian-origin players representing teams like Canada, USA, and Oman. Bajwa captains Canada’s side, which boasts the highest number of such players.
The PM also highlighted Bajwa’s teammates Navneet Dhaliwal, Harsh Thaker and Shreyas Movva. “The jersey may belong to another country, but hearing their names, you realise they are from our country,” he said. “This moment brings slight happiness because these players of Indian origin are representing the nations where their families have settled. Canada’s captain, Dilpreet Bajwa, was born in Punjab’s Gurdaspur. America’s team too has many players from India’s domestic cricket.”
Bajwa’s coach, Rakesh Marshal, called it one of the happiest days of his life. “It is rare for a player to earn a mention in the PM’s address. Gurdaspur is proud of its son of the soil,” he said.
