Gurdaspur judokas rise against all odds

The journeys of sportsmen emerging from poverty to stardom are some of the most inspiring stories. These athletes often battle severe financial constraints, lack of equipment and societal pressures, yet their unwavering dedication and resilience helps transform them into national heroes.

One such sportsman is judoka Rohit Kumar. He won a bronze medal while representing GNDU, Amritsar, at the All India Inter-University Judo Championship, which was recently organised by Chandigarh University.

GNDU stood third in the overall pecking order. The team comprised five judokas, out of which three belonged to the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Coaching Centre, Gurdaspur.

Rohit, whose father works in a local dairy, competed in the 66 kg weight class. He did odd jobs to support his family while his mother worked as a dishwasher. He was spotted by Punjab Sports Department coach Ravi Kumar, who brought him to the training centre. His family is perennially in debt.

Rajneesh Kumar, whose father works in a tent shop, won a bronze medal in the 90 kg weight class. Through rigorous training, he proved that talent can triumph over even the toughest obstacles. His aim is to change his family’s living conditions.

Manav Sharma won a silver medal in the 100 kg category. He belongs to a lower-middle-class family.

The stories of these three judokas are not just about their achievements on the field, but also about their incredible journeys from humble beginnings to being recognised on the streets of Gurdaspur.

These players have battled financial hardships, social pressures and family struggles to chase their dreams, demonstrating resilience and determination that are as inspiring as their skills on the judo mat.
