Devotees across the world gathered to remember the life and teachings of Guru Arjan Dev on the occasion of his birth anniversary at the Golden Temple on Thursday. Guru Arjan Dev ji, the fifth Sikh Guru, was born on April 9, 1563. He is remembered for his humility, spiritual wisdom and service to humanity. He compiled the sacred Adi Granth, which later became the Guru Granth Sahib. His teachings promoted equality, peace and devotion to God. He also became the first Sikh martyr, sacrificing his life for religious freedom and is remembered as “Shaheedan De Sartaj.”

In Amritsar, Guru Arjan Dev ji made significant contributions. He completed the construction of Darbar Sahib and made it open to all, regardless of caste or religion. He also developed important sarovars such as Santokhsar and Ramsar. At Gurdwara Ramsar Sahib, the Adi Granth was compiled under his supervision, making Amritsar a major spiritual centre.

The SGPC organised separate functions at various gurdwaras associated with Guru Arjan Dev ji. A large number of devotees paid obeisance at Darbar Sahib, Gurdwara Ramsar Sahib and Gurdwara Santokhsar Sahib. Special Gurmat Samagams were held, and an Akhand Path was completed at Santokhsar Sahib, followed by kirtan and discourses. SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami extended greetings, saying that Guru Sahib’s life is a guiding light for humanity.

On the occasion, an “Alaukik Jalao” (divine exhibition) was also arranged at Darbar Sahib, Akal Takht, and Baba Atal Rai Tower. A jalao is an exhibition of rare and valuable items preserved in the Toshakhana (treasury) of Darbar Sahib.

The display included precious articles made of gold, silver, and diamonds, along with historic items such as the famous Naulakha Haar associated with Maharaja Ranjit Singh, golden canopies, silver utensils and garlands made of real pearls. Devotees visited in large numbers to witness the Jalao and felt blessed after catching a glimpse of it.
