Panjwar village, linked to a personality of international fame, late Dr Gurdial Singh Dhillon, a former Speaker of the Lok Sabha, lacks in basic civic amenities like potable drinking water, sanitation, sewerage, drainage system to dispose of waste water and safe roads.
The village was provided drinking water facility decades back by setting up tanks and the residents used to get water supply the whole day. Jaswant Singh, a resident of the village, said there are two tanks to supply clean water, but both have become non-functional, and there has been no supply of drinking water in the village for the last more than 20 years.
Most residents often use drinking water from the village Gurdwaras where there are deep bore wells. Jaswant Singh said it is a fact that digging of a more than 50-feet-deep common village pond has made the groundwater unhygienic as waste water and sewage flows into the pond. The village faces the problem of foul smell due to non-availability of the drainage system.
Residents of the village said people who have their own ROs also do not get clean water as their ROs become non-functional soon. Jaswant Singh said that the iron pipes of the water tank have suffered cracks and they leak at various points and cannot carry water because of the leakages. The other ponds in the village too are filled with water hyacinth as the ponds have never been de-silted and cleaned.
The roads of the village are either damaged or left incomplete. The possibility of getting clean water from deep bore wells is not possible as the groundwater gets mixed with sewerage. The roadsides are being used for dumping garbage and the waste has never been lifted for decades. The condition of the locality inhabited by the weaker sections of society is so bad that waste waster accumulates on the streets. In the rainy season, the adda of the village suffers from waterlogging. The residents said it is Gali Mohinder Singh Wali where waste water from the houses accumulates and people face trouble in crossing the streets.
