Illegal de-addiction centre busted in Amritsar

Youth kept in inhuman conditions, assaulted during ‘treatment’

Commissionerate of Police Amritsar has busted an illegal de-addiction centre operating in the Chheharta area and arrested a man.

A team from Chheharta police station conducted a raid at a rented house where the centre was being run without permission. During the search, police rescued 15 people.

Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said the facility had no qualified medical staff and basic infrastructure. Money was being charged from the youth under the pretext of providing them treatment. They were kept in inhuman conditions and physically assaulted during ‘treatment’, he added.

Concerned about the safety and well-being of the inmates, police contacted the civil surgeon.

With the assistance of government doctors and ambulance services, those admitted there were rescued and shifted to a government-run facility.

The arrested accused was identified as Rana Pratap Singh. Police said raids were ongoing to apprehend the others involved in running the centre. The others involved in the racket were identified as Sarabjit Singh, Harpreet Singh and Dilpreet Singh.

A case has been registered.
