AMRITSAR: A jail inmate escaped from the courts complex here on Saturday.

Amritsar, February 17

A jail inmate escaped from the courts complex here on Saturday. He was brought to a court for hearing in connection with liquor smuggling case. He dodged the cops on the pretext of answering nature’s call. The police have registered a fresh case against the accused, Major Singh of Pandori Waraich village. Head Constable Gurnam Singh, deputed to guard him, has also been booked for dereliction of duty.

ASI Tarlok Singh, in charge, Bal Kalan police post, said he, along with a police party, had gone to the courts complex to present him before a court in connection with a bootlegging case registered by Kamboh police station. He was in the custody of Gurnam Singh. He said Major Singh requested him to let him go to the washroom from where he slipped away. The courts complex police have registered a case under Sections 223 and 224 of the IPC against them. Raids are on at the suspected hideouts of the accused, the police said.
