Amritsar Central MLA Dr Ajay Gupta on Friday inspected Nagar Nigam Janana Hospital located in the Dhab Khatika area along with Civil Surgeon Dr Satinderjit Singh Bajaj and municipal corporation officials.
The British-era women hospital is in desperate need of an upgrade and MLA Dr Gupta announced that the hospital will be converted into a mini Civil Hospital with upgraded infrastructure. Located in the heart of the city, the hospital is the only public health centre for maternal care in an area largely surrounded by a population belonging to the economically marginalised category. Dr Gupta held detailed discussion with doctors and staff who explained in detail the deteriorating security situation at the hospital.
“I will meet Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar to get a permanent police check-post established inside the hospital. Also, police personnel would be deployed at this check-post day and night. We are considering shifting the OOAT treatment centre from this hospital to another location,” he said.
The MLA instructed the Civil Surgeon to appoint specialist doctors for gynaecology, medicine and surgery at the hospital. He said that all the medical instruments required by the doctors would be provided. MLA Dr Gupta directed the municipal corporation officials to completely renovate the hospital at a cost of Rs 50 lakh. Currently, the hospital has damaged roofs, walls and floors while new toilet seats would be installed and lights would be fitted in the hospital. The hospital would also be repainted. He directed the MC officials to issue tenders and start the work as soon as possible.
