Akal Takht acting Jathedar leads free-food drive in New Zealand, distributes over 1,000 meals

Acting Jathedar of Akal Takht Giani Kuldip Singh Gargajj today participated in a free food drive organised by the Supreme Sikh Society of New Zealand with the support of the sangat at Gurdwara Sri Kalgidhar Sahib Takanini.

On the occasion, he performed an ardas (Sikh prayer) and formally inaugurated the free food drive, during which more than 1,000 food kits were distributed among the needy.

Speaking after the ardas, Jathedar Kuldip Singh Gargajj said that the Sikh principle initiated by Guru Nanak Dev at Gurdwara Sacha Sauda Sahib, when he started langar for the needy with just Rs 20, continues to bear fruit across the world today. He said that the same spirit was clearly reflected through this free food drive organised by the Supreme Sikh Society of New Zealand and its entire team.

He further noted that the organisation had rendered remarkable services during the Covid-19 period, contributing significantly to the welfare of humanity. He added that such Sikh initiatives have also been appreciated by the New Zealand government, bringing pride to the Sikh community.

Highlighting the essence of Sikh service, he said that such efforts symbolise equality among all human beings, transcending divisions of caste, colour, race, status and wealth, and ensuring help reaches every needy individual. He added that these initiatives had highlighted the distinct identity of Sikhs globally and strengthened the spirit.

The Jathedar congratulated Daljit Singh, President of the Central Sikh Association New Zealand and spokesperson of the Supreme Sikh Society of New Zealand, along with his entire team for their efforts. He said that their work in bringing various gurdwaras in New Zealand under one platform and connecting them with Akal Takht was commendable. He also offered prayers for the well-being and prosperity of all Sikhs and other communities residing in New Zealand.

During the event, Maungakiekie Member of Parliament Greg Fleming was also present and appreciated the Sikh-led free food drive. He thanked the Sikh community for their generosity and said that Sikhs serve humanity selflessly without any discrimination.
