Amritsar, February 26

The Vigilance Bureau (VB) has apprehended Jagjit Singh, junior engineer (JE), and Sanjiv Kumar, sales clerk, both posted at Amritsar Improvement Trust (AIT) while accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000.

An official spokesperson of the state VB said these officials were arrested on a complaint lodged by Inderjit Singh, a resident of Nawan Kot, Amritsar.

He said the complainant had approached the VB and alleged that the two officials were demanding Rs 50,000 bribe for issuing no objection certificate (NOC) regarding ownership of his plot on the railway link road.

The spokesperson said after a preliminary probe, a VB team laid a trap and nabbed Jagjit Singh and Sanjiv Kumar red-handed while accepting a bribe from the complainant in the presence of two official witnesses.

A case under the Prevention of Corruption Act was registered at the VB police station, Amritsar range, against the two suspects, he said. Further investigation was under progress, he added.
