The Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee (KMSC), Punjab, organised dharnas (sit-ins) infront of the SDM offices in the district on Monday. They have been raising their voice in support of a number of demands, including allotment of plots to homeless families, 365-day work allotment under the MGNREGA scheme and against the government’s plan to install a toll plaza at Mannan village on the Amritsar-Khemkaran Highway 354. Women workers of the organisation, too, participated in the protest.
Sawinder Singh Chutala, state leader of the KMSC, said the demands also included compensation for the farmers whose crops have been destroyed due to heavy rain, supply of canal water besides suspension of the proposal to set up a toll plaza at Mannan village.
The organisation also demanded loan waiver for farmers as promised by the ruling Congress in its election manifesto. Protesters in large numbers took part in the protest at Patti and Khadoor Sahib and submitted memorandum to the officials concerned.
