Man duped by online fraudsters



Amritsar: A local resident, identified as Sakatar Singh of Basarke village, was duped of Rs11.55 lakh by online fraudsters on the pretext of installing a mobile tower in his land. While he submitted a complaint to the police in March this year, a case was registered against unknown persons after a probe, on Friday. He told the that he received an advertisement, in which a company had invited applications for installing mobile towers. He said as per the requirement, he deposited Rs11.55 lakh in account of the company. However, the firm neither installed the mobile tower nor returned the money. A case under Sections 420, 467, 468, 471 and 120B of the IPC and Section 66 of the Information Technology Act has been registered against unknown persons. TNS

Encroachments removed by MC

Amritsar: The Estate Wing of the Municipal Corporation removed structures built outside shops near the ISBT and the railway station. Estate Officer Sushant Bhatia said the anti-encroachment drive was initiated on the directions of the Punjab & Haryana High Court. Following instructions by Mayor Karamjit Singh Rintu and MC Commissioner Komal Mittal, we removed illegal sheds and tandoors installed by dhabas on footpaths and roads. These encroachments were posing hurdle to pedestrians and tourists and also were causing traffic problems. Encroachments were removed at Heritage Street and Phoola Singh Burj Road. TNS

Trader commits suicide

Amritsar: A local trader named Onkar Nath Sharma, a resident of posh Green Avenue area, died under mysterious circumstances at a private hospital here on Saturday. He allegedly consumed some poisonous substance at his factory in Verka on Friday. He was rushed to a private hospital, where he succumbed on Saturday. The police handed over the body of the deceased to his family members after a post-mortem examination. The police have initiated action under Section 174 of the CrPC. The police said as per family members of the victim, he has been under depression for the past few days due to business losses.
