Man poisons 2 minor daughters, then kills self over financial distress
The incident left the entire village in shock as three funeral pyres were lit simultaneously at the cremation ground
A pall of gloom descended at Shahura village after a financially distressed daily-wage labourer allegedly consumed poisonous substance and administered it to his two minor daughters, leading to the death of all three.
The incident was reportedly triggered by acute financial distress. The incident left the entire village in shock as three funeral pyres were lit simultaneously at the cremation ground.
The deceased has been identified as Lovepreet Singh, a daily-wage worker, and his daughters Jaspreet Kaur (8) and Veerpal Kaur (6). Lovepreet Singh was struggling to support his family amid poverty and unemployment, barely making ends meet. His wife Kuldeep Kaur was also working at a grocery shop to help run the household.
According to family members, Lovepreet Singh dropped his wife at her workplace on the day of the incident and returned home, where he allegedly consumed poison and gave the same on his two daughters. When their condition deteriorated, they were rushed to a hospital in Amritsar, where all three succumbed during treatment.
Lovepreet Singh is survived by his wife and a minor son, Nabi Noor. Relatives alleged that despite extreme poverty, the family did not receive any assistance from political or religious leaders in the area.
Lovepreet’s uncle, Ajit Singh, said that his nephew was under severe stress due to lack of employment and mounting financial pressure.
The Lopoke police initiated inquest proceedings. After completing legal formalities, the bodies were handed over to the family for last rites.
