Amritsar, August 25
The Amritsar rural police have arrested a fraudster posing as SSP Vikram Jeet Duggal and extracting huge amounts from family members of those who had gone missing.
The accused was identified as Jagtar Singh, a resident of Chohla Sahib. A case under Sections 419 and 420 of the IPC was registered against him. He was sent to police custody for further interrogation.
According to the police, he was nabbed following a complaint filed by a Dhuri resident, Hardev Singh, whose mentally challenged son Daljit Singh (27) had gone missing from the residence in April this year. He alleged he had received a call from the accused on August 19 that he was SSP, Amritsar Rural, Vikram Jeet Duggal.
He told him that his son was traced and he was in possession of BSF personnel at Attari. He demanded Rs 2 lakh to hand over his son. The ‘deal’ was later settled at Rs 1.25 lakh.
Amolak Singh, SHO, Jandiala, said the accused called them at the Jandiala Guru-Tarn Taran bypass. Hardev Singh got suspicious of him and informed the police. The police laid a trap and nabbed Jagtar Singh red-handed.
Preliminary investigation revealed that he used to defraud those people whose wards had gone missing. He was declared a proclaimed offender in a fraud case registered against him at the Division B police station here in 2007.
