Five days after a man shot himself outside the Golden Temple plaza after snatching a pistol from a cop, the police have identified the victim as Hari Prasad of Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. The police are approaching his family members, but are facing language issues.

Taking suo motu cognisance of the incident, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has sought a status report from the DGP.

“The deceased has been identified as Hari Prasad of Coimbatore and the police have informed his family about the incident,” said Harsandeep Singh, SHO Kotwali police station.

The police had also circulated his pictures on social media platforms to establish his identity.

Hari Prasad shot himself near the entrance of the plaza after snatching a weapon from an ASI identified as Ashwani Kumar, deputed on the security of a judge, on September 22.

The body has been kept in the mortuary. The victim apparently had suicidal tendencies as there was a bandage on his right wrist. Later, the police found cut marks on his veins.

Taking suo motu cognisance of the incident, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has sought a status report from the DGP in this regard.
