Amritsar, November 15

A day after the directions by Joint Commissioner of Municipal Corporation (MC), the property tax wing of the MC has taken action against tax defaulters. A team led by property tax nodal officer Pardeep Rajput sealed 10 commercial establishments.

The most of these establishments were on Lawrence Road and surrounding areas. Property tax officials claimed they did not pay tax even after three warning notices. The government had introduced the self-assessment of property tax in 2013-14. A large number of property owners are not filing their returns. Out of 1.5 lakh taxable property owners only 70,000 are filing tax returns.

Pardeep Rajput , nodal officer, said, “We have sealed three readymade garment showrooms on Lawarance Road, a garment godown on Jamun Wali Sadak and two other cosmetic shops on Navi Sadak. One shop has been sealed at Gopal Nagar.

The MC has collected Rs 18.5 crore property tax till date but fixed a target to collect Rs 35 crore till March 31.

“We have urged the residents to pay tax to avoid sealing. A few shop owners, whose shops were sealed today, have paid the tax. We will not exempt anyone and take strict action as per rules”, said nodal officer.
