A two-day continuing medical education (CME) on ‘current concepts and advances in sports medicine’ in conjunction with Indian Association of Sports Medicine at MYAS, GNDU Department of Sports Sciences and Medicine, concluded on Saturday.
Jaspal Singh Sandhu, Vice-Chancellor of Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU), in his inaugural address, highlighted the advancements in the research facilities of the department and directed the students to be well versed with competitive environment for better success. Prof Shweta Shenoy, Dean, briefed about several new courses, including courses in sports nutrition, sports psychology, exercise physiology and sports physiotherapy, hospital administration and post-graduate diplomas which are to be introduced from the next session. She also spoke about the rehab centre, psychological counselling and nutrition counselling centres running in the department.
The second day of the CME programme saw a number of medical experts, such as Dr Arun Chopra, Director, Fortis Escorts Hospital, detailing the students about the ECG and echo changes in athlete’s heart and the precautions to be taken by athletes to prevent sudden cardiac death.
Dr Harjot Singh Makkar, neuro-psychiatrist, delivered a talk on how the stress impacted the performance in sports.
Dr Krishnan Srinivasan, Plastic Surgeon, Amandeep Hospital, spoke on the management of various facio-maxillary injuries that occur in sports.
