Expressing her concern over shifting social dynamics, Punjab State Women Commission Chairperson Raj Lali Gill on Wednesday said the misuse of social media is increasingly fuelling family disputes and breakdowns, while warning that the rising trend of live-in relationship among the youth is steering them in the wrong direction. Gill was addressing a Lok Adalat at the Police Lines here to resolve grievances of women.
During the hearing, the commission took up 33 cases and also received nearly 70 fresh complaints. Gill directed police officials to ensure prompt and fair disposal of cases. Several matters were addressed on the spot, while others were sent for re-investigation.
She said the commission has been organising Lok Adalats across districts to ensure easy access to justice for women, who are unable to approach the commission office in Mohali. “Our aim is to ensure that every aggrieved woman is heard and provided timely and reasoned justice,” she added.
Responding to queries, Gill asserted that the commission works independently and without any political interference, adding that fairness and transparency remain central to its functioning.
Highlighting key concerns, she said increasing intolerance and inability to resolve minor issues are leading to growing conflicts within families. She added that the rise in number of old-age homes was also a matter of concern for society.
Gill warned against the use of derogatory language towards women, stating that the commission takes a strict view of such cases and will not tolerate any form of verbal abuse.
Sharing data, she said since assuming office in March 2024, more than 6,000 cases have been brought before the commission, of which around 80 per cent have been resolved. The cases included matrimonial disputes, property issues, NRI marriages, dowry harassment, domestic violence, exploitation and matters related to live-in relationships.
Senior officials, including Deputy Director Gulbahar Singh Toor, commission member Sukhbir Kaur and police officers, were also present on the occasion.
