Officials of the District Health Department on Tuesday flagged off a food safety van, fully equipped to conduct tests for adulteration in milk, water, edible oils and other items.
The lab on wheels would visit different areas of the city and residents can avail the facility to know the quality of food products being used at their homes.
District Health Officer Dr Lakhbir Singh Bhagowalia said people would have to pay a fee of Rs 50 per sample for testing.
He said residents of any locality can also bring their samples to the office of civil surgeon for testing.
The residents can get kitchen consumables as milk and milk products, haldi, red chilli powder, sharbat, cold drinks, sweets, water and other items tested at their doorstep, said the official.
The test reports will be handed over to the people on the spot.
The food business operators too can get the quality of their products tested before selling to the public at the same fee.
In an appeal to the residents, the officials have asked them to avail the opportunity till April 30, after which lab vehicle would be shifted to another district.
