Modi Part 2: Residents set high hopes

As Prime Minister Narendra Modi is all set to begin his second innings with a thumping victory in the Lok Sabha elections, city residents feel that with a strong government at the Centre, several issues concerning the nation would be dealt with effectively.

Mukul Sharma, a city-based chartered accountant, says he expects the government to come up with a solution to the Jammu and Kashmir issue besides providing a better quality of life for both the poor and the middle class. “Economic policies benefiting the citizens must be introduced and an effective mechanism to fight corruption should be established,” he says.

Ankita Sharma, a banker, says, “The new government should think about bank employees. Our pay revision is pending. We had extended our cooperation to Modi government during demonetisation and also for implementation of multiple schemes.”

“The NDA should try to keep the unkempt promises made earlier. Farm loans should be waived off. Employment and peace must be focused upon. Anti-social elements must be dealt strictly,” says Indu Arora, a social activist.

According to Varun Khanna, president of the Amritsar Parents’ Welfare Association, “The government spending on public education has decreased from 6.15% in 2014-15 to 3.71% in 2017-18. Parents look forward to private schools for quality education which mint money due to absence of any stern regulation. A regulator, just like TRAI, is needed.”

Nidhi Adlakha, president of the Voice of Animals, said, “I hope that the voiceless animals will be considered a significant part of the society. The government should come up with spick and span shelters for them.”
