In the absence of signage and direction boards for the new route plan, the roads leading to the Bhandari bridge witness heavy traffic jam in the morning hours. Observing the situation, the traffic police officials have once again diverted the traffic from Queen’s Road to Cristal Chowk.
However, after the operationalisation of the extension of the Bhandari railway overbridge on Monday, the traffic police had installed some flex boards to suggest new route to reach the railway station but the commuters are not following it yet. The traffic police deployed on the bridge were seen asking the commuters to adopt the new route to reach the railway station, Khalsa College and Attari border.
The traffic police had implemented the new traffic plan on Monday for the smooth flow of traffic on experimental basis. The bridge’s one-way lane to the railway link road was made two-way. But after the implementation of the new plan, the traffic from Crystal Chowk and Rialto Chowk was creating a mess at the bridge. Due to long traffic jam on the court road and Crystal Chowk, the traffic police again made the railway link road one-way in the afternoon. The traffic from Queen’s road was again diverted to Crystal Chowk.
ACP (Traffic) Prabhjot Singh said, “We appeal to the residents to adopt the new route plan to avoid traffic jams. The brain of drivers takes time to adopt new routes. The traffic coming from the Jalandhar side needs to turn left on the new bridge to reach the railway station, university and Chheharta.”
“We are studying the traffic flow from Rialto Chowk. We will prepare some new plan to avoid the jam. We will do some more experiments in a few days. We appeal to the residents and visitors to follow the instructions of traffic police,” said the ACP.
Police officials have also asked the Municipal Corporation to install signage and direction boards to make people aware of the new route plan.
