The male newborn, who was found placed in the ‘Panghura’ at the Civil Hospital, died during treatment in Amritsar late on Thursday night. The postmortem of the body was conducted at the Civil Hospital on Friday, said Civil Surgeon, Dr Shamsher Singh.

Acting on the statement of Kamaljit Singh, District Child Security Officer, the police have registered a case under Section 317 of the IPC against the unidentified women who had placed the baby in the Panghura on Thursday. The baby was the first ever guest the Panghura received since its inception about four months ago by the district Red Cross Society.

The condition of the baby was very critical. It was sent to the ‘Nikkoo ward’ of Guru Nanak Dev Hospital, Amritsar, soon after initial treatment.

The baby had developed hypothermia and apnea. A team of two doctors — Dr Gurpreet Singh and Dr Neeraj Lata — examined the baby. Once the condition of the baby improved slightly, it was referred it to Amritsar.

ASI Gurbans Singh, investigating officer, said the police were scrutinising several CCTVs installed in the town to trace the women who placed the baby there.
