Newly-married ends life

A newly-married woman ended her life by hanging herself from the ceiling of her house in Kot Khalsa here on Friday night. She has been identified as Puja Sharma (25).

The city police have booked her in-laws, including husband, on the complaint of the deceased’s mother, who alleged that she was being subjected to mental and physical harassment for dowry.

A case under Section 304-B of the IPC has been registered against her husband Kamal Singh, mother-in-law Parveen Kaur and father-in-law Dilbagh Singh, all residents of Kot Khalsa. No arrest has been made so far.

Harinder Singh, SHO, Kot Khalsa police post, said the deceased was married to Kamal Singh over a year ago. It was a love marriage. The marriage was against the wishes of her parents.

Sunita Sharma, mother of the deceased, stated to the police that a few days after marriage, she was subjected to harassment. The couple often had quarrels and she used to return to her parents. However, she used to return to her husband after the intervention of relatives.

The couple had a quarrel on Friday as well. The complainant said that the family received the information about her death at around 11 am.

Harinder Singh said raids were on to arrest the suspects while the body was handed over to the family after a postmortem examination.
