The victim, identified as Narinder Kaur (22), had been married to Amrinder Singh on February 4 this year. According to the police, the accused had returned from abroad shortly before the marriage.

Based on a complaint filed by Balwinder Singh, a resident of New Gurnam Nagar on Sultanwind Road and the victim’s uncle, the police have registered a murder case against four members of the husband’s family. The accused have been identified as Amrinder Singh (husband), Gurvinder Singh (brother-in-law), Rajwinder Kaur (sister-in-law) and Rajwinder Kaur (mother-in-law), all residents of Gehri Mandi.

In his complaint, Balwinder Singh alleged that though the girl’s family had provided dowry as per their capacity, her in-laws allegedly started harassing Narinder Kaur soon after the marriage for not bringing a car in dowry. The victim had reportedly informed her family that arguments had taken place over the issue.

The complainant said the family initially tried to counsel the bride instead of escalating the matter, considering that the marriage was recently solemnised.

On Friday evening, the accused allegedly called the victim’s family, informing them that Narinder Kaur was unwell and asked them to come to their house immediately. When the family reached the residence, they found her lying in a pool of blood in a room belonging to her brother-in-law. She had sustained a gunshot injury to the head, while the accused had fled the scene.

The complainant alleged that the victim was shot with the licensed pistol of Gurvinder Singh. The police shifted the body to hospital for a post-mortem and later handed it over to the family.

Sub-Inspector Naresh Kumar said a case of murder has been registered and raids are being conducted to arrest the accused. The investigation is underway.
