Amritpal Singh is currently lodged in the Dibrugarh Central Jail under judicial custody. The case pertains to the February 2023 attack on the Ajnala police station, when Amritpal Singh, accompanied by thousands of supporters, allegedly stormed the police station under the guise of a religious procession to demand the release of one of his supporters, who had been arrested in an attempted murder case.

During the incident, several police personnel, including the then SP Jugraj Singh, sustained injuries. The mob allegedly attacked the police with sharp-edged weapons, sticks and stones.

Following the incident, the Punjab Police launched a statewide crackdown and arrested Amritpal Singh and several of his associates at different times in April 2023. While most of the co-accused are now lodged in various jails across Punjab, Amritpal Singh continues to remain incarcerated in the Dibrugarh Central Jail in Assam.

Rituraj Singh, legal counsel for Amritpal Singh, said that around four witnesses have recorded their statements before the court so far. He added that the court has adjourned the case until July 21.
