Ammy Virk, the man who has risen tremendously as an actor with a string of successful films, including Qismat, Bambukat and Nikka Zaildar series, was in the city to launch the music of his upcoming Punjabi film Muklawa. Another period drama set in pre-Partition era that seems to become one of his favourite genres, Muklawa will hit theaters on May 24 and Ammy hopes that the concept will get noticed despite a probable competition from Arjun Kapoor starrer ‘India’s Most Wanted’.

“It’s a feel good movie that has been made keeping in mind the audience preferences. Off late, period films have been doing good in the Punjabi film industry as they have a nostalgia attached to them. As audience, Punjabis loves watching traditional weddings, grounded characters and old world charm such films bring on screen. I think it started with Angrej and with successive films, including some of my movies, the trend surely seems to be hitting target audience.”

Ammy is also excited to be a part of the ensemble cast of Kabir Khan’s most anticipated film 83, starring Ranveer Singh, which will be his debut in Bollywood. The film is a biographical account of Indian cricket team’s 1983 World Cup win and Ammy will be seen playing the role of pacer Balwinder Singh Sandhu.

“It is a great feeling to be working in Bollywood where films are made with much larger scope. We recently attended the boot camp at Dharamsala and it was a good experience,” he said. Virk has been training himself hard under Sandhu’s guidance to get his swingers right for the role. Another Punjabi singer, who will make his Bollywood debut with 83, is Hardy Sandhu who will be seen playing Madan Lal.

While he is climbing the ladder fast as an actor, Ammy, who left a mark with his song Darya in Manmarziyan, said that he still prefers to be a singer first as “Singing soothes me. It is something that I have always been doing and will continue to do. I am done working on my next album as well.”
