In a major medical achievement, Livasa Hospital, has successfully treated Punjab's first reported case of subglottic tracheal stenosis using advanced bronchoscopic techniques, avoiding the need for high-risk open surgery, claimed the hospital authorities.

The complex procedure was performed by the hospital's pulmonology team led by Dr Baljot Singh, Consultant, Interventional Pulmonology. The patient was treated with balloon bronchoplasty followed by the placement of a silicone tracheal stent, which helped restore normal airflow and ensured long-term stability of the airway.

Speaking at a press conference, Dr Baljot Singh said that earlier, patients suffering from such severe airway narrowing had very limited treatment options and often had to undergo major surgeries involving high risk. He said that with recent advances in bronchoscopic technology, many complex airway disorders can now be treated safely through minimally invasive procedures.

The patient was already suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and had a complicated medical history. About a year ago, he required prolonged intubation, and later, a tracheostomy. Though the tracheostomy tube was removed successfully at that time, he again needed intubation and tracheostomy during a later illness. This time, doctors were unable to remove the tube due to severe narrowing just below the vocal cords. Detailed investigations confirmed subglottic tracheal stenosis, a condition difficult to manage and usually requires complex surgery, said Dr Singh.

Anurag Yadav, CEO of Livasa Hospitals, said the case marks a significant advancement in airway management in Punjab and highlights the growing importance of advanced bronchoscopy.
