PHDCCI seeks site to expand expo

The PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI) has renewed its call for the Punjab Government to allocate permanent land in Amritsar to support the long-term expansion of the Punjab International Trade Expo (PITEX). The Chamber, which has been organising PITEX in the city for the past 18 years, believes that a dedicated venue is essential to sustain its growth and enhancing its economic impact.

PHDCCI deputy secretary general Naveen Seth, Punjab chapter co-chair Jaideep Singh and Nipun Aggarwal reiterated that the request for permanent land has remained pending across multiple state administrations. Despite assurances from former chief ministers, the proposal has yet to materialise. Seth noted that PITEX, which began in 2005 with just 50 stalls, has grown significantly, attracting 550 participating businesses this year. However, due to space constraints, nearly 100 additional exhibitors were unable to participate.

“The Chamber aims to scale PITEX further, but the lack of adequate space is restricting its potential. We need modern infrastructure and ample space to accommodate exhibitors and visitors for a better experience,” said Seth. He added that the Chamber has proposed adopting the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions) model to develop Amritsar as a hub for large-scale events.

The issue was raised during a meeting with Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Cheema, who attended the inaugural ceremony. According to Seth, the allocation of permanent land would enable the city to host regular national and international events, generating substantial revenue and creating employment opportunities. This year’s PITEX features participation from 17 Punjab Government departments, including Markfed, Punjab Agro, the Tourism Department, PEDA, ADA and GMADA.

PHDCCI representatives said with permanent land, several major events — similar in scale to PITEX — could be organised throughout the year, contributing significantly to Amritsar’s economic development.
