Amritsar, December 7

Amid growing concern over the women’s safety in the country, the city police have launched a free pick-and-drop facility for woman if they are stranded out between 9 pm to 6 am.

Police Commissioner Dr Sukhchain Singh Gill has appointed Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Parwinder Kaur as nodal officer for the holy city. He has also appointed women police personnel for the purpose.

The Commissioner said the needy woman could call on a helpline number — 9781130454 — or the control room for help. Giving details, Dr Gill said the police had identified eight points where women cops would remain present with designated vehicles during late hours. These points are PVR multiplex near the bus stand, Vallah Chowk, Chatiwind Chowk, Hall Gate, 22 number railway crossing, 88 FT Road, Putlighar Chowk and Dussehra ground T-point at Ranjit Avenue.

Besides, women can call on helpline numbers 1091, 112 and 181, said the Police Commissioner, adding that a team comprising women police personnel would approach them within minutes and drop them at their homes safely.

He said ADCPs (city 1, city 2 and city 3) will also supervise the functioning of these teams and would provide their support if needed.
