Punjab police official’s son dies of alleged drug overdose
Deceased had returned from a rehab centre a few days ago, found lying dead near a gurdwara in Nanak Pura
As Punjab Police continue its intensified crackdown on drug traffickers and gangsters under ‘Yudh Nashiyan Virudh’ and ‘Operation Prahar’, the alleged drug overdose death of a police official’s son has raised questions about the ground reality.
Akashdeep Saini, 26, a resident of Guru Nanak Pura, was found unconscious near a local gurdwara, late evening and was later declared dead at a hospital. The victim’s father is a head constable in the Punjab Police.
Ashok Kumar, the deceased’s father, was shattered as he recounted that his son had returned just days ago after completing rehabilitation at a drug de-addiction centre. Akashdeep, who was a graduate, had gone out with a friend in connection with a court hearing before the incident.
The grieving father alleged that drugs were being sold openly in the area. “If drugs are easily available, what can the police do? My son returned after rehabilitation only to lose his life. This shows how rampant the problem is,” he said.
SHO Harsandeep Singh of Islamabad police station said further action would be initiated after recording the father’s statement. He added that the exact cause of death would be established following the post-mortem.
