Amritsar, April 21

Employees of the solid waste management company suspended the garbage lifting work due to non-payment of salaries here on Sunday. Almost 850 employees are on strike as they have decided to resume work only after getting their pending two-month salaries.

Officials of the solid waste management company claimed that Mayor Karmajit Singh Rintu and MC Commissioner Harbir Singh had assured them that the funds would be released on Monday. Even after civic body’s assurance, the employees did not resume the work.

Manoj Kumar, in-charge, solid waste management company, said, “The MC has assured to release the funds tomorrow. I have negotiated with the employees and asked them to continue the work, but they denied. The MC will release the funds and the employees, hopefully, will resume work in the afternoon.”

“The assurance is not enough. We need salaries in our accounts,” said an employee.

Though it was the first day of the strike, the bins were seen brimming with garbage. If the strike continues, it will be a tough time for residents.
