A seminar aimed at helping farmers achieve higher yield and sugar recovery from spring sugarcane was organised at the Cooperative Sugar Mill, Ajnala, in collaboration with the Regional Research Station, Kapurthala, of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) here today. The programme was held in line with the directions of Dr Senu Duggal, Managing Director, Sugarfed Punjab, as part of an outreach initiative to guide sugarcane growers on improved sowing practices.
The seminar focused on expanding the area under spring sugarcane, adopting new technologies, promoting early-maturing and high-recovery varieties, and encouraging full mechanisation of crop to address labour shortages.
Experts from PAU shared scientific insights with participating farmers. Dr Navdeep Singh Jamwal, plant breeder, discussed suitable varieties and crop planning strategies for enhancing yield and recovery. Crop scientist Dr Jashanjot Kaur elaborated on scientific cultivation techniques, weed management and ratoon crop care to maximise productivity. Entomologist Dr Rajinder Kumar briefed farmers on major pest threats to sugarcane and their effective management.
General Manager, Ajnala Sugar Mill, Shubhash Chander urged growers to adopt improved technologies and high-recovery varieties to increase profitability.
