The 117th birth anniversary of Shaheed Bhagat Singh was celebrated at Red Cross Bhavan here on Saturday. It was organised by the Red Cross Society, Amritsar. Various NGOs, students from the Red Cross computer centre and members of the Nehru Yuva Kendra participated in the event. Many youngsters paid tribute to the true hero (Shaheed Bhagat Singh) of India’s independence by donating blood.

Amritsar Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sawhney paid homage to Shaheed Bhagat Singh. She said he was a true patriot of the nation and was filled with the spirit of humanitarian service. “His vision to unite all sections of society to break the chains of slavery paved the way for India’s independence, forcing the British to grant freedom to India,” she said. She said it is because of him and many others that we are able to enjoy the freedom today.

The Pragatisheel Lekhak Sangh too remembered Shaheed Bhagat Singh at Virsa Vihar by hosting a literary session and a play dedicated to the United Peasants’ Front, a sub unit of the Sangh.
