Amritsar, July 5

A team of the health wing of the Municipal Corporation issued challans to 27 shopkeepers selling single-use plastic in the city. Health Officer, MC, Dr Yogesh Arora said, “Single-use plastic has been banned by the government and action will be taken as per the law for using the banned plastic.”

While plastic manufacturers have already expressed concerns over the ban on plastic items, residents feel that the government decision was necessary. “The only concern is how the government will implement the ban effectively. If the law is used for harassing small shopkeepers instead of manufacturers and distributors of the banned items, it will not serve any purpose,” said a resident.

“Instead of plastic straws, restaurants can use those of steel, instead of balloons, people can find other alternative items for decorations,” said Joginder Singh, a senior citizen.
