Snatchers have a field day, tourist among 3 targeted

AMRITSAR: A woman was injured while trying to prevent snatchers from taking away her purse in the posh locality of Ranjit Avenue here on Saturday. The victim, Malwinder Kaur, a private schoolteacher, was admitted to a private hospital for treatment.

A woman was injured while trying to prevent snatchers from taking away her purse in the posh locality of Ranjit Avenue here on Saturday. The victim, Malwinder Kaur, a private schoolteacher, was admitted to a private hospital for treatment.

She stated to the police that she worked at Jagat Jyoti School at Mahan Singh Gate. After school hours, she was going to Ranjit Avenue A Block for giving private tuition. She was on foot. Near Cedar Spring School, two motorcycle-borne persons came from behind and tried to snatch her purse. She did not leave her purse and fall down on the road, sustaining serious injuries and bruises. She was admitted to a private hospital by the onlookers.

The police have registered a case under Sections 323, 379-B (2) and 511 of the IPC against unidentified motorcyclists. The entire incident was captured on a CCTV camera installed in the area. The police took pictures of the snatchers from the footage and circulated the same to get clue. A manhunt to nab the suspects has been launched.

In another incident, a tourist from Navi Mumbai was robbed by snatchers on Saturday evening. Ashish Kothari, along with his family, is in the holy city to pay obeisance at the Golden Temple. After visiting the shrine, they hired an e-rickshaw for their hotel on the Mall Road. Near the hotel, unknown bikers snatched their purse. It contained Rs 17,000, an iPhone, plastic money and their identity proofs.

Shamsher Singh, investigating officer, said they had put the mobile phone on surveillance. He hoped that the accused would be arrested soon. He said police teams reached the spot and tried to chase the snatchers, but in vain. “As the victims needed their identity proof for taking a flight, we immediately registered an FIR and provided the same to the victims. The accused will be arrested soon as we are taking the matter very seriously,” he added.

Meanwhile, an unknown youth snatched a purse of a woman professor of local BBK DAV College on Lawrence Road when she was going to her mother’s home in New Pawan Nagar. Paqila Bamri informed the police that two youth travelling on a Pulser bike snatched her purse containing cash and two mobile phones. The police have registered a case while further investigation is under way. The incident has been captured in a CCTV camera. The police have circulated the same among all police stations.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and order) Bhupinder Singh said the police had been taking such incidents seriously and special instructions had been passed to station house officers (SHOs). “No stone will be left unturned to nail the unscrupulous elements,” he added.

Accused unidentified

  • Malwinder Kaur, a private schoolteacher, admitted to a private hospital after she was dragged by bike-borne snatchers who unsuccessfully tried to snatch her purse in Ranjit Avenue. 
  • A tourist from Navi Mumbai, Ashish Kothari, along with his family, was in an e-rickshaw when bikers took away a purse containing Rs 17,000, an iPhone, plastic money and their identity proofs.
  • Snatchers snatched purse from a woman professor of local BBK DAV College on Lawrence Road.
  • All of the accused are unidentified. Two incidents have been captured.
