Members of the Kirti Kisan Union (Punjab) staged a protest against the alleged attempts of distorting the structure of the historical Jallianwala Bagh here on Monday. The activists took out a protest march towards the park from Bhandari bridge. They demanded that the essence of the heritage site should be maintained.

KKU leader Hardev Singh Sandhu said that even 100 years after the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, the government had failed to identity and protect several places of historical importance connected with the massacre.

Sandhu said attempts had been made to change the structure of historical well at the Bagh recently. He also criticised the establishment for plans to impose an entry ticket. The leaders said that the new establishment in the country was trying to change the old structures so as to give them new meaning which suits their political ideology.

The protesters were also addressed by Rashpal Singh, Balwinder Singh Bajwa, Nirmal Singh Gali, Dhanwant Singh Khatraekalan, Sukhraj Singh Chinna, Parshotam Singh Gehri and student leader Rajinder Singh Majhail.
