After two recent incidents of student violence on campus, the Guru Nanak Dev University security team’s credibility is being questioned by student organisations, which lament that outsiders have been coming into hostels unchecked at odd hours, even attacking students. A clash between outsiders and students at the university, reported a few days ago, allegedly turned violent, after which the police and campus security teams were called to the spot.
Students allege that some outsiders entered the campus after “permitted” hours, and attacked two students inside boys’ hostel-2. “One of the students sustained serious injuries around his eyes. How can outsiders enter the university
without any security check?” a BTech student, residing in boys’ hostel-2, said. Jaskaran Singh Zira, a final-year student at the university, said, “It happened on the night of the Governor’s visit. Three different incidents of outsiders causing disruption were reported. In this incident, outsiders were caught drinking inside the boys’ hostel, and attacked some students who raised objections. After the clash, the Dean (Student Welfare) and the police registered our complaints. We demand action against the students who invited the outsiders into their rooms and consumed alcohol,” he said. The two hostel rooms where outsiders were reportedly caught consuming alcohol were sealed immediately. Dean (Student Welfare) Satnam Singh Deol assured students that their demands — stricter security checks and action against the students responsible — were considered immediately. Hostels will now require ID checks before entry. An inquiry has been ordered in this regard.
