Several unidentified unscrupulous elements fired at a police patrolling party near Gujjarpura here on Monday night. The police team had a narrow escape. The accused, travelling in a car, managed to flee the scene. Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) JS Walia said they had clues and the accused would be identified and arrested soon.

ASI Jeewan Singh, in charge of Gujjapura police post, said he, along with his patrol team, was heading from Gujjarpura to Nagar Nigam Colony in south subdivision when at around 1 am a white Innova car (PB29X4095) came from the opposite side. On seeing the police party, the three occupants of the vehicle reversed the car in an attempt to escape. He said their car hit an electricity pole due to which the car was damaged.

“When the police party tried to arrest the suspects, one sitting behind fired at them. The cops had to crouch to save themselves,” he said, adding that the number plate of the car fell after hitting the electricity pole.

The police have registered a case under Sections 307, 34 of the IPC and 25, 54, 59 of the Arms Act was registered against the unknown persons. Walia said the cops were trying to identify them with the help of the car number plate. The registration number can be fake, but the investigation is under way to ascertain the facts.
