Harpreet Singh, a youth of Khankot village, whose body was found from the village canal, had allegedly died of drug overdose.

The police have booked four youth for allegedly killing him. They were identified as Dilawar Singh of Gumtaliya Kila Jiwan Singh, Manpreet Singh of Hothiyan village, Gabbar Singh and Bhinda of Kila Jiwan Singh village. The police had registered a case under section 302, 201 and 34 of the IPC in this connection.

Parampal Singh, SSP, Amritsar rural, said Ranbir Singh, brother of the deceased, alleged that the accused had injected drugs in his arms and later threw his body in the village canal.

Investigations revealed that Gabbar and Bhinda were drug peddlers while Dilawar and Manpreet were addicts.

The complainant is learned to have told the police that the deceased worked at Nandini gas plant Daburji as driver. He said day before yesterday, when he was going from Khankot to Sri Guru Ram Das Hospital for personal work, he had seen his brother travel on two bikes, along with the four accused.

When asked, Harpreet said they were going for work and would return soon. However, he did not return till the evening. The family started looking for him as his mobile phone was switched off. Yesterday in the morning, his body was found floating in the village canal during a search.

Ranbir alleged that the accused killed Harpreet by injecting drugs in his arm. He said the accused had a quarrel with Harpreet a few months back because he had refused to lend money to buy drugs.

The police also found two syringes from near the canal which were sent to a forensic science lab for examination.
