After getting victorious for the second consecutive term of Chief Khalsa Diwan (CKD), the president of the century old Sikh body Dr Inderbir Singh Nijjar with his team members paid obeisance at the Golden Temple.

Dr Nijjar got a thumping majority to occupy the coveted post. He said his team performed the ardas of ‘sarbat da bhala’ and prosperity of the CKD.

Spelling out his priorities, Dr Nijjar said the CKD aims to promote ‘sikhi te sikhya’ (Sikhism and education). He would work to raise the standards of education, offering courses for students in skill development, computer and IT field. He said his focus would be to initiate CKD students’ overall personality development including general etiquette and english speaking for their holistic development.

“The teaching pedagogy has to be updated with the changing education scenario. I intend to prepare CKD students to compete at the global level. Similarly, the sports infrastructure in the CKD run institutes need to be upgraded,” he said.

He said that from next year, the CKD charitable society has planned to open a book bank consisting of older books of passing out students for the use of needy students. “To reduce the financial burden on parents, the uniform of the students has not been changed for the last two years and definitely would not be changed for the next five years,” he said.

He added that for the propagation of Sikhism, various religious seminars, amrit sanchar, gurmat music, religious camps, visit to historical Sikh shrines including Sri Kartarpur Sahib (Pakistan) would be on the chart.

Others present included newly elected vice-presidents Dr Santokh Singh Sethi and Jagjit Singh Bunty, resident president Kuljit Singh Sahni, honorary secretary Sawinder Singh Kathunangal and Ramneek Singh Freedom.

CKD runs 48 schools, three colleges, orphanage, old age homes, hospital and clinics.
