AMRITSAR: A migrant woman and her baby died after their clothes caught fire accidentally while she was about to prepare tea in Gali Kitte Wali in Kot Baba Deep Singh here on Wednesday.

Amritsar, January 23

A migrant woman and her baby died after their clothes caught fire accidentally while she was about to prepare tea in Gali Kitte Wali in Kot Baba Deep Singh here on Wednesday.

The deceased were identified as Sonam (22) and Kisna (6 month). According to information, the duo died on the spot due to severe burn injuries on face and suffocation.

Police officials, including Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) JS Walia reached the spot for investigation. The bodies were sent for postmortem examination. He said further action would be taken after the arrival of woman’s parents from Uttar Pradesh.

Giving details, Walia said the victim was going prepare tea while holding the child. It was when she lighted the gas stove, her synthetic clothes caught fire all of a sudden. Before she could react, fire engulfed her body as well as the infant. The six-month-old child sustained severe burn injuries. By the time neighbours reached the second floor of the house where they lived on rent, they had died. Her husband Mahesh Kumar works as a goldsmith in Guru Bazaar.
