Woman kidnapped by kin after inter-religion marriage

A newly-wed woman, identified as Amritpal Kaur, a resident of Harike in Tarn Taran, was reportedly abducted by her family members from a hotel located in the Civil Lines here a few days ago. The reason behind it is said to be her marriage with a man of another faith against the wishes of her family. The couple had been hiding in Amritsar.

Ironically, a court in Tarn Taran had directed the police to provide security to the couple earlier this month. However, before the police provided security, her family members got a wind of their whereabouts and abducted her in a car. Though her husband Surinder Kumar, who runs a mobile phone repair shop at Harike in Tarn Taran, lodged a complaint with the police immediately after the incident in the mid of this month, the police registered a case on Thursday evening. The victim is yet to be traced.

Following his complaint, the police have booked the woman’s father, Jatinderpal Singh, alias Shera, brother Arunpreet Singh, alias Robin, both residents of Harike, Harcharan Singh of Harike and Salwinder Singh of Dhun Dhaiwala village. A case under Sections 341, 365, 506 and 34 of the IPC has been registered against them.

Police officials said raids were on to trace the girl and arrest the accused, who had been on the run since the incident. Surinder said the accused abducted her from Crystal Chowk. The girl, after clearing her senior secondary education, had taken admission to law course at Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU). Surinder runs a mobile phone repair shop in Harike. After falling in love, they informed their families that they wanted to marry, but the girl’s family was against it. Therefore they got married in a gurdwara in Tarn Taran earlier this month. He urged the police authorities to rescue his wife.
