Amritsar, January 13

Lohri celebrations took a tragic turn in Tej Nagar when a newly married youth was stabbed to death here on Sunday evening. The accused had lit a bonfire in a street with whom the victim had an argument as he sought passage while heading to a market nearby. The accused fled the scene.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) JS Walia confirmed the incident. The deceased has been identified as Kanwaljit Singh. He was married around nine months ago. His friend Sikander sustained severe injuries as the accused hit his head with bricks. He was rushed to a hospital.

Since it was the first Lohri after Kanwaljit’s marriage, his family had organised celebrations. He, along with Sikander Singh, had gone to the market to buy some necessary items. On the way, some people had lit bonfire and gathered around it. The victims sought a way and this has led to arguments.

Soon, it took an ugly turn when a youth stabbed Kanwaljit with a sharp weapon in his chest. He also thrashed his friend, who tried to intervene. They hit him with bricks on his head.

The ADCP said a probe was on to identify the accused.
