Naib Subedar Bana Singh: The hero of Siachen
Naib Subedar Bana Singh, a legendary Indian Army soldier, is celebrated for his unmatched bravery and patriotism. Born on January 6, 1949, in Kadyal village, Jammu and Kashmir, Bana Singh grew up in a modest family. From an early age, he was inspired by the stories of valour of Indian soldiers and harboured a dream of serving the nation.
Bana Singh joined the Army in 1969, enrolling in the J&K Light Infantry Regiment. Through his determination, discipline and exceptional skills, he rose through the ranks, earning the respect of his peers and superiors. His dedication to the service of his country was evident in his unwavering commitment to every mission he undertook.
His most notable contribution came during Operation Rajiv in 1987 — a mission that made him a household name across the nation. The operation aimed to capture a strategically vital Pakistani-held post on the Siachen Glacier, situated at an altitude of over 20,000 feet. The post, later named ‘Bana Post’ in his honour, was heavily fortified and nearly impenetrable due to its steep approach and hostile weather conditions.
Displaying unparalleled courage and determination, Bana Singh led his team in treacherous conditions, braving sub-zero temperatures and strong enemy resistance. Under his leadership, the Indian soldiers launched a daring assault and successfully reclaimed the post. His bravery in the face of overwhelming odds and his ability to inspire his team to achieve what seemed impossible were a testament to his extraordinary valour.
For his heroic actions during Operation Rajiv, Bana Singh was awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India's highest military award for valour, in 1987. The citation highlighted his indomitable courage, exceptional leadership and selfless dedication to the nation. He became one of the rare recipients of this prestigious award and his story continues to inspire generations of Indians.
The post he captured remains under Indian control and is considered one of the highest battlefields in the world. The Bana Post serves as a symbol of Indian resilience and valour.
Bana Singh was given the honorary rank of Captain at his retirement. He retired from service on October 31, 2000.
After retiring from active service, Bana Singh continued to contribute to society by sharing his experiences and inspiring the youth of the country to serve the nation. Despite his fame and numerous accolades, he has remained grounded and dedicated to his principles.
Naib Subedar Bana Singh’s name is etched in the annals of Indian military history as a symbol of unwavering bravery and sacrifice. His actions during Operation Rajiv exemplify the spirit of the Indian Army, where personal safety is secondary to the call of duty.
Bana Singh's life is a shining example of patriotism and courage, reminding all Indians of the sacrifices made by the armed forces to protect the sovereignty and integrity of the nation.
