The UT police today detained 75 Congress leaders and workers while they were marching towards the BJP office in support of party leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who was detained on Friday and stopped from going to Sonbhadra where 10 persons were gunned down. The police later released the Congress leaders and workers.
About 100 workers led by Pardeep Chhabra, Chandigarh Congress president, carried out the protest march. Former MP Pawan Kumar Bansal was also present among other senior party leaders from the city.
Carrying placards, they started the march from the Congress Bhawan in Sector 35 towards the BJP office, Kamalam, in Sector 33. The Congress workers raised slogans such as “Yogi-Modi murdabad.” They also raised the slogans hailing Priyanka Gandhi.
However, the police stopped the protesters from matching ahead in Sector 34. The police and the Congress leaders jostled with each other. The police had a tough time managing the protesters.
The SHO of the Sector 34 police station told Chandigarh Tribune that they detained 75 workers and later released them.
“Detaining Priyanka Gandhi was illegal and undemocratic decision of the Yogi government. We are against such attitude of the government. We extend full support to our leader,” said Chhabra.
