Despite opposition by councillors, the Municipal Corporation is bringing the water tariff hike agenda in the coming MC House meeting on September 8. MC Commissioner Bhawna Garg confirmed the development.
According to the MC proposal, which will be part of the MC House meeting on September 8, the civic body will hike water tariff only for those using water above 60 kilolitre (kl) per month.A senior MC official said the consumption in the northern sectors was high as compared to the southern sectors, colonies and villages.
A detailed study conducted by the engineering wing of the civic body has revealed that residents of northern sectors are using over 1,000 litre of water per person per day against the national norm of 135 litre per person per day. The posh sectors use somewhere between 934 litre and 1,376 litre of water per person per day.
A report prepared by the MC states, “The consumption is more in the northern sectors as compared to other sectors and some sectors such as 2, 3, 4, 5 and 9 are drawing more than 1,000 litre per person per day as against the average domestic demand of the city, which is 252 litre per person per day. This is due to the fact that the houses are of size 1 kanal or more in these sectors and drinking water is used for irrigation of lawns, causing wastage of water.” The southern sectors use far less water compared to the posh sectors in the north. The consumption of water in Sector 56 is 138 litres per person per day.
