Cops’ anti-drug drive kicks off

AMRITSAR: The city police have chalked out a 15-day mass public contact programme to spread awareness against drug abuse.

The city police have chalked out a 15-day mass public contact programme to spread awareness against drug abuse. Under the programme, policemen will go to schools, colleges and other educational institutes. They would also organise police-public coordination meetings in the city.

Police Commissioner SS Srivastava on Wednesday flagged off a bike and scooter rally from his office. The main objective of the rally was spread awareness against rampant drug abuse and asked the people to stay away from it.

Srivastava said drug abuse patients would be identified and sent to outpatient opioid assisted treatment (OOAT) clinics for de-addiction.

He said the police had adopted zero tolerance towards drug traffickers and we were also trying to involve people in this campaign. “It is imperative for the public to participate and help the cops in eradicating this menace from the society. The youth should be joined with sports clubs and to keep them busy in doing constructive work,” he said.

He appealed to people to share information regarding drug traffickers in their areas. He said the informer’s name would be kept secret.

He said people could share information with control room and also dial 9781130666, 0183-2527100, 0183-2529100 and STF’s helpline 79019-59595 and 79019-39393.

In the rally, around 200 cops from PCR teams, employees of SAANJH kendras, woman PCR teams took part. They held banners with slogans against drug abuse. The rally passed through different roads and culminated at the Circuit House.

Meanwhile, a road march was organised by the Amritsar rural police that started from Rayya grain market and culminated at Canal Rest house after passing through different bazaars. The march was led by Ashok Kumar, Sub Divisional Magistrate, Baba Bakala, Gurvinder Singh, DSP, Baba Bakala, SHO Beas and other police officials, besides anganwari workers and people.
